READ-A-THON 2014

A fun celebration of reading that promotes good reading habits

Welcome to our 4th annual Read-A-Thon, where we celebrate the joys of reading and promote good reading habits.

Each year we give reading a boost with this event. Our aim is to encourage good reading habits while generating funds for furnishing our school’s library. We have fun activities planned for the 6 week period (March 10th – April 17th 2014) and it is our wish to end this Read-A-Thon with our students having a brand new appreciation for reading.

Please join us this year as we make Read-A-Thon 2014 the best one yet!

General Information:

  • Each student will get a notebook (from the school) in which to draw a picture and write a summary of each story he/she has read. * Kindergarten: 1 – 2 sentence *Grades 1 and 2: 3-5 sentences and *grades 3-5: 1 paragraph. At the end of each summary, a parent, teacher or guardian must date and sign to validate the written piece. The first page of your child’s read-a-thon book is done for you as an example.
  • The notebook MUST come to school every day, as any book read at school will be counted.
  • Ask friends, family, neighbors, and community members to pledge (give an amount of money) for each page read. Think about it: if someone pledges just one dollar per page, and you read 200 pages, that’s $200. If you collect five or maybe ten pledges, that means $1000, or $2000 and so on. And that’s just one of you. Multiply that by the number of members in your class who will participate, and ca-ching, the dollars mount up. Which will lead to a CLASS PRIZE !
  • Also provided is a pledge form to keep track of the pages you read, and a column for totaling up each donor’s donation. You’ll see that there is a place for your teacher, parent, or librarian to sign to verify your page count.  Download Pledge Form:  Read-a-thon 2014
  • All books and pledges will be collected on April 14th and 15th so we can tally and prepare prizes for MOST PAGES READ and MOST MONEY COLLECTED.
  • Character Parade will be on April 17th at 9 a.m. (more information will be posted on the notice board). Other planned activities will be posted.book
  • Now start collecting the books you want to read. Your teacher might give you some extra free – reading time—and maybe there’ll be a little less homework some days! When the Read-a-thon is completed, calculate the donation for each pledge and enter the amount in the fourth column on the pledge form. Ask your parents or teachers to help you check the math.
  • There will be many fun reading activities throughout the next six weeks so keep an eye on the notice board.

HAPPY READING !
